Home Battery Storage Without Solar Panels

If you’ve been researching home batteries, you’ve probably noticed that most of what’s written about them assumes you’re also getting solar panels at the same time. It’s a reasonable assumption, since the two are often installed together, but it leads to a common question we get asked directly: can you actually get a home battery without solar panels?

The short answer is yes. At Portcullis Power Solutions, we install battery storage systems across Nantwich, Crewe and the wider Cheshire area, and a growing number of these are standalone installations with no solar panels involved at all. Here’s how it works, what the benefits are, and how to work out whether it’s worth it for your home.

How Does a Battery Work Without Solar Panels?

A home battery doesn’t generate any electricity itself, whether or not you have solar panels. Its job is simply to store electricity for later use. With solar panels, that electricity comes from your roof during the day. Without solar panels, the battery is charged from the grid instead, typically overnight when electricity is cheapest.

The battery then discharges that stored electricity during the day or evening, when demand (and the price you’d otherwise pay) is higher. It’s essentially a way of buying your electricity at the cheapest possible time and using it whenever you need it, rather than being tied to paying peak rates throughout the day.

Why Would You Want a Standalone Battery?

The main driver behind standalone battery storage is the rise of time-of-use electricity tariffs, where the price per unit changes depending on the time of day. Overnight rates on some tariffs can be a fraction of the daytime rate, and a battery lets you take advantage of that gap without having to change your habits or run appliances at 2am.

A few common reasons homeowners choose a standalone battery over waiting for solar panels:

  • Your roof isn’t suitable for solar (wrong orientation, heavy shading, or a roof that needs replacing soon).
  • You’re renting or unsure how long you’ll stay in the property, and solar panels feel like too big a commitment.
  • You want backup power during outages without the added cost of a full solar installation.
  • You’re on, or considering switching to, a time-of-use tariff and want to make the most of cheap overnight rates straight away.
  • You’d like to add solar later but want the financial benefit of a battery now.

Do You Lose Out Compared to a Solar-Plus-Battery System?

You do lose one thing: without solar panels, you can’t generate and store your own free electricity during the day, so all the electricity going into the battery is still being bought from the grid. This means the savings from a standalone battery come purely from the price gap between cheap and expensive electricity, rather than from free generation.

That said, this gap can still be significant on the right tariff. It’s also worth noting that a standalone battery is usually a lower upfront cost than solar plus battery together, so the payback calculation is different, not necessarily worse, just based on a different set of savings.

Can You Add Solar Panels Later?

Yes, and this is one of the most common questions we get from customers who go the standalone route. Most modern battery systems are designed to be compatible with solar panels being added at a later date, so installing a battery now doesn’t lock you out of adding solar in the future.

It’s worth mentioning this at the point of installation, though, since the inverter and setup used can vary depending on whether solar is likely to be added later. If there’s a reasonable chance you’ll want solar down the line, it’s worth telling your installer at the outset so the system is specified accordingly.

What Does a Standalone Battery Cost to Run?

Running costs come down to two things: the size of the battery and the difference between your cheap and expensive electricity rates. A battery is charged using grid electricity, so there is a cost involved, but it’s the gap between the rate paid to charge it and the rate saved by using it instead of peak-rate electricity that determines whether it’s worthwhile.

This is different from a solar-plus-battery system, where the Smart Export Guarantee and free generation both play a part in the savings. With a standalone battery, your savings depend entirely on your tariff structure, so it’s worth checking what’s available before committing. Ofgem publishes up to date information on tariffs and the wider energy price cap if you want to compare what’s currently on offer.

Is a Standalone Battery Worth It?

It depends largely on your electricity usage pattern and the tariff you’re on or planning to move to. Homes with high evening electricity use, and access to a decent day/night price difference, tend to see the best results. The Energy Saving Trust has useful independent guidance on battery storage and how it fits alongside different tariff types if you want a broader view before deciding.

As with any electrical installation, it’s worth having a proper assessment of your home’s usage and existing electrical setup before installing a battery, standalone or otherwise. This also ties in with wider checks like an EICR, particularly in older properties where the existing consumer unit or wiring may need attention before a battery can be safely connected.
