Solar Panel & Tesla Powerwall Installation, Nantwich

The Project

This project, carried out on a traditional clay-tiled roofed property near Nantwich, brought together a full solar and battery storage installation with a strong focus on finish as well as performance. The homeowner wanted generation, storage and backup power in one system, without the roof looking like an afterthought once the scaffolding came down.

The result is a 20-panel all-black solar array paired with a Tesla Powerwall and Gateway, finished with a solar skirt for a clean, seamless look along the panel edges. As well as generating and storing renewable energy, the system includes automatic backup changeover, meaning the property switches to battery power automatically in the event of a power cut.

Working on a Traditional Clay-Tiled Roof

Clay-tiled roofs require a different approach to mounting compared to standard concrete tiles, both in terms of how the rails are fixed and how the roof is protected during the work. Rails were fitted directly to the roof structure, with cable entry points carefully sealed and padded where cabling passed through the tiles, rather than left exposed to the weather.

An All-Black Finish, Front to Back

All-black panels were specified from the outset, giving a much more uniform look than the silver-framed panels still common on a lot of installations. To finish the job properly, a solar skirt was fitted around the base of the array, closing the gap between the panels and the roof rather than leaving it open. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between an installation that looks fitted and one that looks bolted on.

Tesla Powerwall and Gateway

The battery side of the system was built around a Tesla Powerwall, paired with a Tesla Gateway to manage the switch between grid power, solar generation, and stored battery power. Alongside the Powerwall, DC isolators were fitted for each string of panels, all mounted cleanly to the property’s brickwork.

One of the key benefits of this setup is automatic backup changeover. If the power goes down, the property can switch over to battery power without any manual intervention, keeping essential circuits running rather than leaving the homeowner without power until it’s restored.

With scaffolding up across the full roof line, the team worked methodically along the property, running rails, fitting panels, and completing the cabling before moving on to the battery and gateway installation at ground level.

The Result

The finished installation gives the homeowner solar generation, battery storage and automatic backup power in a single, well-integrated system, without compromising on the appearance of the roof. It’s a good example of what’s possible when generation, storage and finish are all considered together from the start, rather than the aesthetics being an afterthought.
