The Project

Portcullis Power Solutions attended a poultry farm in Shropshire where the immediate job was straightforward in principle: get the ventilation fans up and running.

The site comprises large poultry buildings with extensive ventilation and electrical control equipment. With the fans forming part of the working environment inside the sheds, getting the system operational was an important job for the farm.

Ventilation in a Poultry Building

The scale of the building gives a good indication of why ventilation matters on a working poultry farm. The sheds accommodate large numbers of birds, with fans and associated systems used as part of managing the internal environment.

Unlike a simple domestic extractor fan, an agricultural installation of this scale can involve dedicated electrical controls and equipment serving different parts of the building.

That means a problem affecting the fans may require investigation of the electrical and control systems associated with them rather than simply looking at an individual fan in isolation.

The Electrical Controls

The farm has substantial existing electrical control equipment associated with its poultry buildings. As the photographs from the job show, the installation includes multiple control panels and electrical equipment serving the site.

Portcullis worked with the existing installation with the objective of getting the ventilation fans operational again.

Without making assumptions about the original fault or individual components involved, the important result from this visit was that the fans were brought back into operation.

The Result

The objective of the visit was to get the farm’s ventilation fans running, and that was achieved.

For a working agricultural site, resolving an issue like this is about restoring the equipment the business relies upon and allowing the site to get back to normal operation.

This project also demonstrates the variety of environments Portcullis Power Solutions works in. Electrical work isn’t limited to homes, offices and shops. Farms and other agricultural premises can have substantial electrical installations, controls and equipment that need experienced attention when problems occur.

Commercial, Industrial & Agricultural Electrical Work

Portcullis Power Solutions undertakes electrical work across a wide range of commercial and industrial environments, from warehouses and workshops to specialist sites such as this Shropshire poultry farm.

You can find out more about our commercial and industrial electrical services, including electrical installations, fault finding, lighting, power and electrical systems for business premises.

Every site is different, particularly where specialist equipment and existing control systems are involved. Our approach is to understand the installation in front of us and determine what is required rather than assuming that every electrical problem has the same solution.
